In recognition of his outstanding service to the community through emergency response organisations, John was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in January 2020.

John remains deeply committed to community service. He currently serves as Chairman of Foundation Broken Hill—his hometown—and in 2024, he was appointed to the Board of Pilatus Australia, further extending his governance expertise and passion for community-focused leadership.
